PEN Mondays: Teaching Trends to Watch in 2025

What’s Hype and What’s Here to Stay

MAKING IT EASIER TO BE A BETTER TEACHER

5 min read

Welcome to 2025, where education continues to march forward, sometimes boldly, sometimes like a toddler trying to walk in oversized shoes.

Every year, the teaching world gets flooded with new ideas, shiny tech, and buzzwords that sound like they were generated by a random education jargon machine.

But which of these trends are worth your attention, and which are destined to be the fidget spinners of pedagogy? Let’s break it down—with a little humor, of course.

But first, the one thing that never goes out of style - getting the nutrients your body needs (outside of coffee of course).

If you’ve made any kind of health and wellness goal this year, our sponsor this week may be able to help!

AI: Friend, Foe, or Frenemy?

AI is no longer the new kid on the block—it’s the popular kid who’s taken over the yearbook committee and is also running for class president. From generative AI tools that help students cheat (I mean, collaborate creatively) to ones that streamline grading for teachers, it’s everywhere.

The real question is how to make AI work for you. Are you using it to personalize learning, create engaging lesson plans, or free up your time for actual teaching? Or are you stuck playing AI whack-a-mole, trying to catch students submitting ChatGPT-generated essays?

The hype is real, but so are the opportunities—if you set clear boundaries and expectations for its use in your classroom.

The Resilient Rise of SEL

Social-emotional learning isn’t just a trend; it’s become the sturdy pair of jeans in education’s wardrobe. Sure, some people question its necessity (probably the same folks who think kids just need “tough love”), but in 2025, SEL is more critical than ever.

After years of pandemic disruptions and the ongoing social media maelstrom, students are navigating a mental health landscape that’s, frankly, exhausting.

As teachers, weaving SEL into daily routines isn’t just about helping students—it’s about keeping your classroom from turning into a reality show reunion episode. It’s not hype; it’s humanity.

Gamification: Leveling Up or Played Out?

If 2020 was all about digital gamification, 2025 is where things get nuanced. Gone are the days when slapping a leaderboard on your lesson plan counted as innovation.

Today, the focus is on meaningful, curriculum-connected games that engage students without overloading teachers.

Think escape room-style learning for problem-solving, or simulations that make history feel alive (without making you spend six hours building a “perfect” Kahoot).

The trick is finding a balance between fun and function—because while kids love a game, they also love figuring out how to exploit the rules.

Hybrid Learning: It’s Not Going Away

If you thought hybrid learning was a pandemic relic, think again. Schools are leaning into flexible schedules and remote options for students who need them.

While it’s not as chaotic as 2020’s trial-by-fire, hybrid learning is still evolving, and so are the challenges it brings.

The key here is to focus on adaptability. Can your lessons work in multiple formats? Are you equipped to engage students who are physically in front of you while also not forgetting the ones staring at you from tiny Zoom boxes?

Hybrid isn’t going away, so the sooner we embrace its quirks, the better.

What’s All This About “Quiet Quitting”?

Teachers aren’t “quiet quitting.” They’re loudly setting boundaries, and honestly, good for them. In 2025, the idea of doing your job well—but not taking on unpaid extras like running every club or planning every event—is no longer taboo.

The trend? Advocacy. Teachers are finding their voices to demand fair treatment, manageable workloads, and, shocker, competitive salaries.

This isn’t a passing fad; it’s a movement—and one worth keeping an eye on as unions and education boards negotiate the future of the profession.

So, What’s the Verdict?

Trends in education will come and go, but the good ones stick because they actually make a difference. AI, SEL, gamification, hybrid learning, and teacher advocacy aren’t just passing fads—they’re shaping the way we teach, learn, and interact.

As you navigate 2025, remember this: You don’t have to jump on every bandwagon. Focus on what works for you and your students. And when in doubt, keep it simple. After all, the best teaching tool has always been you.

Here’s to a year of inspired lessons, fewer emails, and (hopefully) a working laminator in the staff room. You’ve got this!
