PEN Mondays: Happy New Year Teachers!

Making 2025 The Year of YOU!

MAKING IT EASIER TO BE A BETTER TEACHER

4 min read

Happy New Year, Teachers! Let’s Make This the Year of You!

New year, same chaotic, beautiful, slightly coffee-stained you—but with a twist. This year, we’re focusing on being the absolute best version of ourselves for our students, our colleagues, and yes, for ourselves too.

Because let’s be honest: the version of you that’s running on four hours of sleep and stress-snacking on stale staff-room doughnuts isn’t doing anyone any favors.

So, grab your favorite mug, fill it with optimism (or coffee, let’s be real), and let’s dive into how this year can be all about becoming the teacher your students deserve—and the human you deserve.

Self-Care Without the Side of Guilt

First things first: let’s clear something up. Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s not about spa days or overpriced candles (although, if that’s your thing, we’re not judging). It’s about making sure you’re not running on fumes while trying to run a classroom.

Start with the basics: Are you sleeping enough? Eating something that isn’t from the vending machine? Moving your body in ways that don’t involve chasing a kid down the hall? These small changes add up to a healthier, happier you—which translates to a more patient, engaged teacher.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out what your school board offers in terms of mental health support or wellness perks. You’re paying for those benefits with your hard-earned salary, so you might as well use them.

Think of it as the professional equivalent of using every last drop of your teacher discount at the bookstore.

Mastering the Art of Routines

The secret to thriving in teaching (or at least surviving) is finding routines that work for you. No, not the “wake up at 5 a.m. and meditate for an hour” routines unless you’re some kind of superhero.

We’re talking realistic habits that help you stay prepared, sane, and maybe even a little ahead of the game.

Take a moment to think about what worked for you last year. Was it laying out your lesson plans a week in advance? Keeping a secret stash of emergency chocolate in your desk drawer?

Blocking out your prep periods for actual prep instead of solving the world’s problems in the staff room?

And here’s where the magic happens: share your wisdom with your fellow teachers. Let’s make this the year of swapping hacks like they’re currency. You never know who has the perfect trick for organizing IEPs or how to actually keep markers from disappearing.

Boundaries Are Your Best Friend

Ah, boundaries. The unsung hero of a teacher’s sanity. This year, let’s resolve to be firm but kind—with students, with parents, and yes, even with ourselves.

For students, it’s about consistency. Follow through on what you say, and they’ll learn to trust you. For parents, it’s about setting the tone early: “Here’s how I run my classroom, and here’s how we can work together.”

Sure, some will test those boundaries (hi, we see you, helicopter parents), but standing firm is what earns respect in the long run.

And let’s not forget the golden rule of teaching: CYA. Keep those emails, document everything, and remember that if it’s not in writing, it didn’t happen. It’s not about mistrust; it’s about making sure everyone’s on the same page—and covering your bases when they’re not.

Cheers to the Year Ahead

This year is going to be what you make it. Maybe you’ll tackle that big project you’ve been dreaming of. Maybe you’ll simply make it through June without losing your last working whiteboard marker. Either way, you’ve got this.

Here’s to a year of growth, laughter, and making a difference—one lesson plan (and cup of coffee) at a time. Now, go be the best you. Your students—and your future self—will thank you.
